Relative Size of Alaska

Visitors to the 49th state often ask, “How big is Alaska?” Well, click on the thumbnail image to the left to find out. Sorry Texas…and Montana…and California.

    What projection does this use?

    I ask only because I wonder if this is Alaska, with the latitudes all stretched out… Or is this Alaska with the latitudes equivalent to the latitudes in the Lower 48?

    Oooh…good question. The projection of the base layer, SRTM DEM is Mercator. As you know, Alaska (and any land mass above 60 N) looks quite distorted when using a Mercator projection. So, this is Alaska with the latitudes equivalent to the latitudes in the Lower 48. In ArcGIS, you can monkey with the meridians and parallels to create such an overlay.

    Oh yeah, interestingly enough, the same size comparisons hold true for residents’ beards…
