If you’re hankerin’ for Apple Mail or Mozilla Thunderbird on steroids, then check out Postbox. Postbox is a desktop email application built on the open-source Thunderbird code that’s packed full of features, including an “inspector pane” which summarizes message content, conversation view of message threads, and a tabbed interface. Mac users will also enjoy the direct integration with Apple’s Address Book. You can use Postbox on Windows and/or a Mac with a single license.

If you feel like buying Postbox after your free, 30-day trial, save 25% on the purchase price by simply clicking on the image in this post. Send email like the wind.

Google services took a temporary dirt nap this morning. This single event was responsible for a slight increase in the Earth’s mass, thus affecting it’s gravitational pull on the moon. As a result, the moon appeared larger in the sky and high-tides were anomalously greater by 1.47 inches. Rumor has it that the Earth’s magnetosphere was also weakened, thus allowing a massive solar wind storm to ruin the lives of all those inhabiting the planet.

I actually abandoned Google services in mid-March and it’s been…well, peaceful. I don’t know about you, but as of late Google’s services have been going down more often than Paris Hilton at a Chippendales-sponsored hot dog eating contest. Gmail has been unreliable, calendars in Gcal have not been loading for me, and syncing all things Google to my MacBook and iPhone is frustrating. Calaboration offers calendar sync (CalDAV) between Gcal and iCal, but can’t sync to the iPhone via MobileMe. Google Sync can be set up on the iPhone, but doesn’t sync alarms (honor default Gcal alarm settings) and is limited to only 5 calendars. NuevaSync offers up to 11 synced calendars but also does not honor default alarm settings. Despite a few bumps here and there, I have been content using Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! Search, iNews iPhone app, iCal, and MobileMe (which has been rock solid for me).

So I survived going 14 days without Google. Big deal, you might say, but as soon as Google and I kissed and made up, I couldn’t help but notice how my productivity increased by 147.368%. Oh, yeah…I got a Jabber account because I couldn’t use Google Talk and my friends were all, “Mm-uh, listen here Funky Monkey. What’s up with the new Mac chat name from Berlin?” Google may eventually assimilate us into the Borg, but damn do they make useful, intuitive software. Seriously, what else is there if you’ve had a 15-round cat fight with Google, Apple, and Microsoft? One of these 324? Mee-yow! Nuff said.

Update: 25-Mar, 2009
I’m bypassing the whole cookie/tracking issue by running Gmail and Google Calendar in Fluid site-specific browsers. Also, I can sleep at night because I’m browsing the web with Firefox and the NoScript, Adblock Plus, and BetterPrivacy add-ons.
