I’m Dumb Because My Parents Spanked Me
24-Sep, 2009
According to my Aunt, rest her soul, I was a horrible baby. She would also tell me how awful of a kid I was at every visit. My brother and I would beat the hell out of each other at every waking moment. As a result, my Mom would often jam our head into a corner and make us stand in the corner for 15 minutes…an eternity when you’re 8 and 5 and a half. I was also stabbed on the top of my hand with a fork for drumming on the table when asked (three times) not to drum on the table AND hit in the back of the head with a table spoon when misbehaving during dinner.
Ahh…the memories. For the record, my parents were (and are) excellent parents. Many people (mostly those who love me and have to say it) tell me that I turned out OK. ;-)
Which brings me to the article that inspired me to write tonight:
Children Who Get Spanked Have Lower IQs
I don’t know about the whole “trauma adversely affects the brain” thing because I really traumatized my younger brother and he’s one of the most intelligent guys I know. Rock on G.
Get Your State Out of Debt by Getting High
16-Jul, 2009
I listened to an APM Marketplace podcast a while back, entitled “Medical Marijuana on California High,” which, among other things, discussed how some estimate that marijuana is a $14-billion industry in the state. California is one of three states (Rhode Island and New Mexico) where it’s legal to buy cannabis for “medicinal purposes.” If you haven’t been following the news or perhaps just got back from being marooned on a deserted island after a horribly freakish FedEx cargo plane incident, California is flippin’ broke. Even it’s IOU’s are being turned down.
As I listened to the podcast, it seemed pretty obvious what the Golden State needs to do…legalize the ganja.
I was perusing today’s news during lunch and “BAMMO!” There it was …Calif. tax officials: Legal pot would bring $1.4B. According to the article:
The bill introduced by San Francisco Democratic Assemblyman Tom Ammiano in February would allow adults 21 and older to legally possess, grow and sell marijuana.
The article also went on to say that legalization would also likely increase use by 30% as a result of falling prices. Personally, I’m looking forward to watching the future Price is Right episode, in which a young contestant, named Mary Jane, in her 3rd year of college, chooses two dime bags to arrive precisely at $20 FTW in the Grocery Game.
“Whatta-we-have for her, Johnny?!” “Mary Jane will enjoy a relaxing 6-day, 7-night stay at the world-renowned Betty Ford Center!” Queue applause.
